kiev-based artist nastya nudnik inserts symbols of the internet age into classic fine art, paring popular emoticons with recognizable painted works. ‘emoji-nation’ comprises series’ of familiar images that have been appropriated from renowned artists, from edward hopper to michelangelo. these works are brought into the 21st century with the addition of smiling icons reminiscent of iMessage, pop-up alerts from the windows interface and emblems from instagram found ubiquitously throughout the app. each motif cleverly and humorously represents the sentiment of the scene, bringing life and real human moments to the static setting.

israel-based artist peddy mergui has envisioned a series of food packaging, extended from the lines of luxury brands. the exhibition ‘wheat is wheat is wheat’, currently presented at the museum of craft and design, san francisco through june 15th, 2014, displays the collection of crafted boxes, containers and cases, each bearing a familiar trademark of a well-known brand. nike, tiffany, gucci and apple — to name a few — are logos featured on the packs, which are aesthetically described by visual elements and characteristics appropriate to each label; for example, fruits are contained in geometric and angular grey crates, emblematic of the nike brand.

‘the various exhibits combine shapes and images from the world of consumption with concepts from the field of consumer ethics.’ mergui describes ‘they serve to highlight both the contentious, potentially arbitrary connection that products have to packaging, and the ethically challenging conditions in which designers are asked to operate. using humorous, yet provocative undertones, wheat is wheat is wheat will leave you with more questions than answers – particularly on your next trip to the supermarket.’

the outdoor stage designed by chinese studio dl atelier gives the illusion of a full moon sitting over a mountain. located right on the edge of a river in malan village in hebei province of northern china, the rounded platform is for a local children’s orchestra. after being approached by their teacher, deng xiaolan, the architects were asked to come up with a scenic set for them to perform on. the envisioned structure behaves a backdrop that appears as natural as the group of little musicians. the project enables the village to experience the beauty of music, while also enjoying the uplifting atmosphere of the surrounding environment.

bruno the brown bear had his home in the italian alps, but it was inevitable that he would roam around, eventually making his way over to bavaria – the first bear sighting, in what is now germany, in approximately 170 years. unfortunately, while doing so he survived on sheep and hunters. posing him as a threat, the government saw him killed in 2006 despite much opposition from animal lovers.

moved by the tragic story, eiko ishizawa decided to ‘recreate’ the incident in a way. the netherlands-based artist has employed this notion of camping gear, transforming the sleeping bag to take on the appearance of a bear, formulating association between one’s love of the wilderness, and the fear of the unknown in the great outdoors.

the great sleeping bear‘ sees one take on the role of the furry beast, with a human face peeking out from the hairy mammal’s mouth – a sculptural but functional object that crosses the boundaries between contemporary culture and nature, and sees one taking on the role of the feared.

having developed multiple prototypes of the sleeping bear bag, ishizawa has now made the protective blanket available for purchase. however, the transaction doesn’t just stop at the point of sale. the artist invites owners of ‘the great sleeping bear’ to photograph themselves using the design from their various global locations, and send their experiences of using the sleeping bag to create a collage that expresses the freedom of animals to be able to wander around without threat.

‘the sleeping bear bag’ is being made in very limited editions, with only a few issued each year. if you’re interested you should contact eiko ishizawa as soon as possible.

expansive landscapes form the backdrops of the theatrical photographic portfolio of floto + warner(cassandra warner and jeremy floto). the new york-based creatives explore a range of natural panoramas subtly interrupting, or greatly obstructing them to alter their viewer’s perspective.

‘green salt’

for their ‘colourant’ series, the artistic duo has chosen the barren landscape of northern nevada as their stage in which they have conducted floating sculptural eventscapturing fleeting moments in which vibrantly pigmented liquid has been thrown into the air. taking many attempts to perfect the technique of tossing the fluid substance in just the right way to obtain a range of free-flowing configurations, the resulting images express shapes that are non-discernible and ephemeral in their existence.

the large splashes of dyed matter are shot with a high-speed shutter (typically set at 3200th of a second) that freezes the action, the hued masses obscuring, while also complimenting the landscape, like momentary graffiti suspended in air. each image is presented as it is taken, without any photoshop editing.
